Water System Public Notification-Hydrant Flushing

The Ford River Township Water System will begin flushing fire hydrants on Monday, September 15, through Thursday, September 18.

Flushing water mains is a maintenance process that improves water quality at the tap by removing accumulated minerals, sediment and tuberculation (a buildup common in iron pipes that reduces its ability to transmit water). This also allows us to identify hydrants in need of repair. The flushing process can cause low water pressure and frequently disturbs the accumulated minerals and sediment in the water mains. The quick release of water from a hydrant causes them to dissolve and temporarily discolor the water delivered to homes and businesses.

The townships hydrants have not been flushed for several years, and it is expected to see this color come through some of your homes service lines. The township will be feeding a small amount of chlorine during the flushing procedure to help reduce any discoloration.

Although the water is safe, we recommend running a cold water tap for several minutes (10+ minutes possibly) to help clear the discoloration before using it for drinking or laundry.
